Product Description:

2009 Whitebox Jeff Fenech Signature Yarra Valley Pinot Noir

The 2009 season began with great promise. Decent rainfall in November and December encouraged strong vine growth, and it appeared that a healthy crop was on its way.  In mid-January, conditions began to deteriorate with dramatic results. A climax was reached in late January through to early February.  Three days of temperatures in the mid 40’s were followed by the big one:- Black Saturday, the 7th of February.  Savage winds and extreme heat decimated pockets of the vineyard, however a limited quantity of high quality fruit was harvested, particularly from whites and early ripening reds such as Pinot Noir.

Fruit for this wine was picked at optimum ripeness and then crushed and transferred into traditional small open fermenters. The wine was pressed off early to avoid harsh, bitter tannins and accentuate the soft, velvety nature of the variety. Malo-lactic fermentation and maturation followed in French oak barriques and temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.

The Jeff Fenech signature wines are small parcels chosen by Jeff that showcase what he truly loves about Whitebox red wines – intensity, purity, elegance and balance. The 2009 Yarra Valley Pinot is deep scarlet in colour, with a nose showing plum, strawberry and spicy French oak.  The complex palate exhibits abundant sweet fruit, velvety tannin and a lingering aftertaste.

Whitebox wines are fashioned with respect to terroir and tradition. Drinking well now, this wine will continue to develop in the bottle for many years to come.

This wine is a perfect accompaniment to a wide range of dishes. It matches beautifully with dishes containing poultry, veal, pork, lamb or mushrooms – such as lamb shanks; braised duck with mushrooms, or even barbequed pork sausages and lamb chops. This wine was awarded silver medal at Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition 2012!
